This tutorial created May 20, 2002 and is the sole property of Bubbles' PSP 2002. This tutorial may not be copied to another site in any shape or form UNLESS you have permission from me. PSP groups, please feel free to use my tutorials in your groups; I just ask that you share the url to the tutorial and not pass the tutorials through the email. As always, I love hearing from anyone that is trying out my tutorials; so please feel free to email me and show me your creations :)

You will need the following to create this tutorial:

PAINT SHOP PRO (Trial Version)

SIMPLE FILTERS

FILTERS UNLIMITED *NOTE* You can still do this tutorial even if you do not have Filters Unlimited. I am using the rounded frame effect and you can easily use your favorite bevel settings in PSP.

SUPER BLADE PRO **Optional - May use goldfill pattern or Ulead

VISUAL DISTORTION

You will also need an image. If you wish to use the same image that I am using, just right click and "save as" to YOUR server. I downloaded this graphic from a site that claimed it was free to use on the internet and have since seen it up for sale at a poster shop. But I cannot find an artist's name to give credit to or to contact about using this image. If anyone should know who the artist is, please email me with the information. Thank you.

Okay, let's get started on our tutorial!

1. Open your graphic in PSP; Go to Shift+D and make two copies of your graphic. Close your original graphic and minimize one of the copies for now.

2. Click on your selection tool and use the following settings: Ellipse; feather=0; antialias checked.

3. Go to your graphic and place your cursor at the center of your image. My graphic is 279w x 397h so I set my cursor at 139,198. Draw an ellipse around the part of the image that you want framed. (See my example below)

4. Selections/Invert. Effects/Texture Effects/Blinds using these settings: Width=9; Opacity=43; color=black; horizontal checked.

5. Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow using these settings: Opacity=75; Blur=14.8; Vertical=1; Horizontal=1. Repeat drop shadow except this time use -1 for the vertical and horizontal setting. Selections/Select None.

6. Set your background color to white (#FFFFFF). Image/Add Borders 5 pixels symmetric checked.

7. Grab your magic wand (tolerance 0 feather 0) and click on your white border to select. Apply your Blade Pro preset or goldfill pattern. I'm using Gold-Tipped from The Treasure Trove. You will the gold-tipped preset on page 36. There are lots of beautiful presets at The Treasure Trove. Selections/Invert. Effects/3D Effects/Cutout using these settings: Opacity=65; Blur=15; Vertical=3; Horizontal=3. Repeat cutout except this time use -3 for both vertical and horizontal settings. Selections/Select None.

8. With your background color still set to white, go to Image/Add Borders 35 pixels symmetric checked. Grab your magic wand, same settings as before, and click on your white border to select. Bring up the second copy of your graphic that you had minimized and Edit/Copy. You can close that graphic now. Go back to your working copy of the graphic and Edit/Paste Into Selection. Effects/Blur/Gaussian Blur with a radius of 10. Do not deselect.

9. Effects/PluginFilters/VM Distortion/Vision Impossible using the settings shown below.

10. Effects/PluginFilters/Simple Filters/Diamonds. Effects/PluginFilters/VM Distortion/Distortion by Brightness using the settings shown below. Do not deselect.

11. Effects/Texture Effects/Blinds using these settings: Width=9; Opacity=43; color=black; check light from left/top. Repeat blinds effect once more. Do not deselect.

12. Effects/PluginFilters/Filters Unlimited/3D Glass Frame (rounded) using these settings: Frame size=41; Shading=230. Do not deselect.

13. Colors/Adjust/Brightness-Contrast with these settings: Brightness = -30; Contrast= 5. Selections/Select None.

14. With your background color set to white (#FFFFFF), go to Image/Add Borders 3 pixels symmetric checked. Grab your magic wand and click on the white border to select. Apply your Blade Pro preset or goldfill pattern. Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow using these settings: Opacity=100; Blur=2.5; Vertical=1; Horizontal=1. Repeat drop shadow using same setting except using -1 for vertical and horizontal this time. Selections/Select None.

15. Your frame is now finished. If you want to add corner dings, add a new layer (Layers/New Raster Layer), set your background color to white (#FFFFFF) foreground color to null and click on your text tool to select your ding. I used a brush for my corner ding size 125. I'm sorry I don't know what the name of the corner ding is. Apply your bladepro preset or floodfill with your goldfill pattern. I applied a drop shadow with these settings: Opacity=100; Blur=0; Vertical=1; Horizontal=1.

16. Use your mover tool to move the ding to the left corner of your framed image. Go to your layer palette, right click on your corner ding layer and select "duplicate". Then go to Image/Mirror. You should now have a ding in the right upper corner. On the layer palette, right click on that corner ding layer and select "duplicate". Then go to Image/Flip. You will now have a ding on the lower right corner of your frame. Back to your layer palette, right click on that ding layer and select "duplicate". Then go to Image/Mirror. You should now have a ding on the left lower corner of your frame. Layers/Merge/Merge All (Flatten).

17. Resize if necessary, remembering to go to Effects/Sharpen/Sharpen after you resize. Save in preferred format. Below is another result of the tutorial using a graphic by the artist Jonathon Earl Bowser. Click on his name of visit Mr. Bowser's lovely site.
